Notes:
- 5 mins to plan.
- List similarities and differences.
- Use structure to write it.
In the GQ cover, David B is represented as sophisticated as he is wearing at tuxedo which has connotations of wealth and elegance. This contrasts with the cosmo cover, where CU is represented as fun and sexy.
- Anti stereotype as on cosmo there is a male instead of female.
- A female instead of male on GQ.
- Unexpected representation for males.
- Presented in a feminine way on cosmo( Pink/ other colours stereotyped for females.)
- Style of clothing seen as more female.
- The pose on Cosmo is seen as feminine.
- The masculinity on cosmo is still seen because of his muscles.
- On GQ Rihanna is being sexually objectified.
- Rihanna(Medusa) shown as powerful.
- The cover lines are still masculine on GQ.
Gender in Cosmopolitan is shown as a stereotyped gay man(Tom Daley) dressed in feminine and bright colourful clothes. Anti stereotypes are also used as he is in feminine clothing which people think should usually be present in females.
Gender in GQ on Rihanna(Medusa) is presented as anti stereotypical as she is presented as Medusa who is powerful which in most magazines is the Males. She is also being sexually objectified as she is not wearing any clothes appealing to the males who buy GQ.

- Born in Kingston, Jamaica.
- Been playing the highest level of football since the age of 17.
- He is 5ft 8
- Born 8th of December 1994
- Began his career at Queens Park Rangers
Sterlings career started at Liverpool which in 2015 he transfered to Manchester City where the media presented young black footballers in a different way to white young footballers. Eventually Sterling said the media was helping and that it was fuelling racism. Back in 2018 when he played for Liverpool the Chelsea fans were making racial chants and abuse towards him and he took action which is when the media posted about the situation which led to Sterling saying it wasn't helping the situation.

Raheem sterling GQ analysis:The typography is sharp and sophisticated suggesting that its aimed at ABC 1 audience which will be more interested in his backstory to football rather than the actual football. The bold colours suggests his wealth. The wings he is wearing links to the Main cover line 'Guardian angel' and the word guardian is used to protect which in this case is the people who are being racially abused. The fact that he is black when angels are stereotypically white showing that black people can also be angels. It also connotes his position on the football field which is on the 'wing.'

CASE STUDY 2: Vogue
Vogue shows that they have taken a different approach to previous magazines as they are not only showing different races but also genders. In the past Vogue didn't include diversity as it was all white female. The newer covers that Vogue have created shows the variety in covers with diverse races, religions and gender.
Malala:
- Born 12th July 1997.
- Shot in the head by Taliban gunman.
- Born in Mingora, Pakistan.
Malala is a 27 year old Pakistani education activist who was born in Mingora, Pakistan. When she was 15 she had an assassination attempt on her where she was shot in the head which soon after led to being deaf in one ear this was due to her writing and acting against the rights of women's education. I think Vogue used her in on the magazine cover to show diversity and all the good she has done.

Cover analysis: Media language
Firstly, the main image shows Malala being presented in the middle of a Z shaped format which presents her as the most important thing on the page. The masthead is displayed above her head to highlight her religious beliefs. Vogue has stereotypically had dominantly white cover stars over the years it has been published for. They have used Malala on the main cover to reach out to the audience informing the audience about the world troubles such as Malala when she was 15. Unfortunately Malala was shot by a taliban member whilst on the bus due to her beliefs and right doing fortunately she survived. The bold red colour of which she is dressed in presents the blood from her past which also symbolises her bravery and from now on she talks and acts on what she thinks is right and wrong. The red could also show her wealth and fortune as the colour red could be associated with a ruby.
The main cover line 'Survivor, activist, legend' suggests the legacy she has enforced through her life stories and bravery of acting against what other stand for or what she thinks is wrong.
Exam question:
The main image(Malala) presents her religion being highlighted through the bold red clothing that is wrapped around her body and head. Her religion is also presented through her hand that is positioned on her face. The red shows her bravery and love for what she does such as her being an activist.

- Portraying something in a certain way to show something.

- No she isn't.
- Wealth and power.
Representation
In the past muslims have been represented as violent and negative and are stereotypically seen in the media as terrorists and are usually male. However they are rarely presented in a positive way as they are stereotyped as aggressive.
In terms of ethnicity, the Vogue cover shows diversity.
- Female likes/ interested in fashion
- Malala presented on cover- anti-stereotypical(Diversity of religion)
- Presenting woman as powerful(stereotypical) Muslim woman presented as powerful(anti-stereotypical)
- Presented as feminine through hand placement, jewellery and makeup (sterotypical)
Explain how both ethnicity and gender have been represented on this cover:
Ethnicity is stereotypically used to present muslims as aggressive and quite violent however they are usually presented in media as male, straight and associated with terrorism. However, Malala is shown as elegant with her hand placement highlighting her religion. Malala is known for her educational activist side which goes against media stereotypes of Muslims.
Gender is stereotypically shown woman as elegant which however isn't shown through the cover star that features on vogue which is Malala despite the stereotypes of woman always being on Vogues covers. The featuring of a muslim woman shows the anti-stereotypical themes that vogue want to start showing. The way she isn't presented on the main cover still shows the idea of her feminine looks and positioning of her hand on her face.

Malala 25 Mark question:
Similarities:
- Serious expression
- Same gender
- Follows the same design pattern
- Bold fonts to stand out
Differences:
- Dressed in different colours
- Ones looking away from the camera other isn't
- Medium long shot, Medium close up
- Ones presented as more revealing the other isn't
- One cover contains fashion and beauty the other presents the suffering and strength
- Different use of colour on cover lines
- Presents a more feminine look with the stereotype of pink
There is a substantial amount of differences compared to similarities.
The representation of these two covers present the heavy differences of the contents on the Malala cover compared to the Elle magazine cover.
This representation has presented Malala in a more serious way where she is dressed in red to show wealth and power where as in the Elle cover Kim Kardashian is dressed in white to show elegance which is stereotyped to be the normal feminine representation to be dressed in more revealing clothing.
Another way these two covers contrast each other is through the camera shots which are used. In the Elle cover she is presented in a medium long shot to show off her whole body where as in the Vogue cover Malala has been shown in a mid close up to show her clothing instead of her body this highlights her religious dressing rather than the elegance which is shown through Kim Kardashian in the Elle cover which connotes the sexualisation in female covers.
In addition, the cover lines are used in a pink colour which connotes the feminine stereotypes of women and what colours they tend to dress in. Also, a bold font is used to link to the cover star Kim Kardashian which is presented to be bold with how she is dressed and is highlighted through the use of the clothing being bright. In the vogue cover the cover lines are used in a contrasting colour to red to highlight the text which some of them link to Malala and shows her suffering but also strength which connotes her attempted assassination in 2012.
However the cover stars have been presented with similar poses to be presented as elegant where they are also shown to be dressed in bold colour to stand out but are used in different ways.Kim Kardashian is presented in a mid long shot in revealing clothes which connotes the stereotypes of female magazine covers.
My conclusion is that the covers are similar in the ways they have presented but are shown in different ways to symbolise meaning. However the way that woman have been represented in the two covers are very different one presented in a bold way due to body features where as the other is used to highlight her religion.

Question 1: 5 Mark question= 2 points
1d) Vogue have used a certain design to surround Malalas face as if it is trying to highlight her rather than the text around it. Vogue had also used the same colour for their brand as 'survivor, activist, legend' which could be used to show that they are linked and have used Malala to raise awareness of what happens in other countries. The colour red is used to present the idea of wealth but also power which.
2a)What was going on in society at the time the text was written:
Social context refers to my points as Vogue usually have the stereotypes of their cover stars being of the white race with a slim body and a perfect face. They also usually contain the main ideas of fashion. Additionally the world had just came of lockdown and the magazines realised that people would want to know whats going on around the world after being aloud outside again so they used this as a chance to educate. Furthermore this links to Malalas country Pakistan being at risk from Afghanistan as the US had just left leaving the countries vulnerable. Vogue also saw this as an opportunity to make money as they realised more people would want to buy it to be educated as it is more relevant to the everyday world.
2b)Ethnicity is the characteristic of people based on having shared culture:
